Clyde-WorleyParsons, pioneer of revolutionary flash furnace feed technology, is pleased to announce completion of a proof of flow stability evaluation with one of the world’s leading copper producers.
Criteria for feed system accuracy and stability were set by this producer which, if met, would indicate to them that a breakthrough in flash furnace feed control technology had been achieved. Clyde-WorleyParsons has successfully completed testwork that demonstrates its feed system does in fact achieve this level of performance.
Flash furnace performance relies heavily on burner flame and reaction shaft control and stability. Optimum reaction shaft control requires a feed rate that is stable and accurate within the concentrate flash reaction timescale. Reaction shaft residence time is typically 0.5 to 1 second. Breakthrough technology, as defined by the copper producer’s senior smelting technologists, would exhibit mass feed rate stability within ±10% of target flow at the 0.1 second timescale; availability in the market of such high stability flash furnace feed technology would enable the next level of flash furnace performance optimisation and development to occur.
With high stability feed control the smelter operator can, with confidence, implement operating strategies tailored for their smelter aimed at capturing flash furnace productivity gains and economic benefits predicted by Clyde-WorleyParsons.

Clyde-WorleyParsons will be presenting a paper at the 6th International Copper Conference, which is scheduled to take place between 25-30 August 2007 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada.
Clyde-WorleyParsons will present their paper, entitled, “Transforming Flash Furnace Feed and Burner Stability > Powering Performance and Productivity” on Monday 27 August at the Pyrometallurgy track. This particular track’s objective is to bring together world experts to address the latest innovations in copper pyrometallurgy and their impact on the copper industry.
Clyde-WorleyParsons will present a paper focused on the ways in which their advanced, next generation flash furnace feed system can help to fuel improved furnace performance.
The paper will discuss the field test work undertaken to date, the impact of findings and the ongoing analysis of linkages between instabilities in the various components of conventional feed systems and furnace pressure stability.
In addition, Clyde-WorleyParsons will be available for 1-2-1 sessions in the Fairmont Royal York Hotel’s Prince Edward Island Room on both Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 August if any delegates would like to take the time to discuss their furnace feed system operation in greater detail.
Sessions on these days are running at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm on both days.

The Clyde-WorleyParsons joint venture is pleased to announce the launch of its new website. The combination of particulate solids conveying and injection technologies of Clyde Materials Handling, with the flash furnace process knowledge and expertise of WorleyParsons, has led to the development of the innovative pneumatic Flash Furnace Feed Injection.
This system has been developed as a direct response to feed stability problems routinely faced by operators of flash furnace systems. Clyde-WorleyParsons has demonstrated and quantified the links between pulses in concentrate feed rate from conventional scraper chain conveyors (and other components of conventional Loss-In-Weight feed systems) and the instability of flash furnace operation. The pneumatic Flash Furnace Feed Injection system presents a far superior engineering and economical solution to the common agricultural type conveying system currently in use. Furthermore the cumulative economic benefits for a greenfield installation are estimated to be many millions of dollars.
